Osama bin Laden reprisal fears prevent US markets powering ahead

The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 staged rallies in early trading yesterday as the killing of bin Laden, the mastermind of the Sept 11 terrorist attacks in the US, encouraged buying.

By late afternoon, however, the markets had given up those gains, as attention turned to the possibility of reprisals from al-Qaeda or other terrorist groups.
