President Obama, proposing Mr Bernanke's second four-year term at the helm of America's central bank, praised the economist for his "bold action and out-of-the-box thinking" that has ensured the US is now in the early-stages of an economic recovery.

In a heartfelt speech, the US President thanked the central banker for bringing "our economy back from the brink" and for his work towards rebuilding a "new foundation for growth and prosperity".

The announcement, made by the US President during his week-long holiday in Martha's Vineyard off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, ends months of speculation as to whether or not Mr Bernanke would be given a second term in the role.
