The Austrian Ducat
Ducats were issued in Austria as early as 1612. The last regular issue dates from 1914. From that date onwards, all ducats are re-strikes; they are still being produced by the Austrian Mint, always dated 1915. There is some tradition in Austria for issuing commemorative coins posthumously. Ducats are produced in high purity gold, 23 3/4 carats, making them one of the highest purity gold coins ever issued. They are characterized by their thinness, at only .8 mm thick. This is due to the fact that they inherited their design and appearance from medieval coins. The design on the obverse depicts Emperor Franz Josef I, with the inscription FRANC IOS I D G AUSTRIAE IMPERATOR. The reverse shows the Austrian coat of arms upon a crowned double-headed imperial eagle with the inscription HUNGAR BOHEM GAL LOD ILL REX A A 1915.Please email our Sales Team
