The top U.S. commodity regulator will consider limits on speculation in physical commodity markets including energy and metals at a meeting on Dec. 16, Commodity Futures Trading Commission Chairman Gary Gensler said today.

Curbing commodity speculation is one of the most contentious provisions of the Dodd-Frank financial overhaul. The CFTC has received hundreds of comments on so-called position limits and discussed the issue in at least 75 of the more than 400 meetings commissioners have held with banks, oil companies, hedge funds and others.
